About Bitcoin
Bitcoin (BTC) is the world's first decentralized cryptocurrency, launched in 2009 by the pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto. Operating as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system, it enables global transactions without central intermediaries like banks or governments. The network is secured by a Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mechanism using the SHA-256 cryptographic algorithm. Bitcoin has a strictly capped maximum supply of 21 million coins and features programmatic halving events approximately every four years, earning its reputation as a deflationary store of value or "digital gold." Since the 2024 approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in the U.S., the asset has seen significant institutional adoption and is utilized as a primary treasury reserve for various corporations. The ecosystem has evolved beyond simple value transfer with the introduction of Ordinals, BRC-20 tokens, and BTCFi (Bitcoin Finance) protocols such as Babylon, which allows BTC staking to secure other networks.
