Layer 1 (L1)
Layer 1 networks are the base settlement layer for their own ecosystems: they validate transactions and produce blocks without depending on another chain. Tokenpedia tracks 149 assets in this category.
Layer 1 is the lowest tier of a blockchain stack. An L1 has its own consensus (Proof of Work, Proof of Stake, or some variant), its own native token, and its own validator set. Bitcoin and Ethereum are the canonical examples. Solana, Cardano, Avalanche, Sui, Aptos, and TON are also L1s, each with different trade-offs between throughput, decentralization, and finality time.
L1 tokens earn value from network usage (gas fees) and from securing the chain (staking rewards or PoW mining rewards). They tend to be the most resilient holdings in any crypto market: when a category like DeFi or NFTs cycles, the underlying L1 still settles the activity. The question worth asking about any L1 token is which other categories run on it and whether that ecosystem is growing or shrinking.
