Real World Assets (RWA)
RWA tokens represent off-chain assets (treasuries, real estate, private credit, commodities) bridged onto a blockchain. Tokenpedia tracks 78 assets in this category.
RWA tokenization brings traditional financial assets on-chain so they can be traded, used as collateral, or fractionalized. The largest sub-category by far is tokenized US Treasury bills (BlackRock's BUIDL, Ondo's USDY, Franklin Templeton's BENJI), which crossed $10B in TVL in 2024 by offering on-chain investors yield comparable to the federal funds rate. Other RWA flavors include private credit (Goldfinch, Maple, Centrifuge), real estate (Propy), commodities (PAXG for gold), and carbon credits.
The category is interesting because it imports the trust assumptions of the off-chain asset (the issuer, the custodian, the legal wrapper) onto a chain that otherwise tries to minimize trust. That hybrid model is precisely the appeal: institutions get familiar legal protections, on-chain users get composability and 24/7 settlement.
When evaluating an RWA token, the questions are who the issuer is (regulatory standing matters here), how the off-chain asset is custodied and audited, and how the on-chain wrapper behaves under stress (can holders redeem instantly, or only on settlement days?).
