Proof of Stake (PoS)
Proof of Stake replaces miners with validators who lock up the network's native token as collateral; misbehavior gets the stake slashed. Tokenpedia tracks 60 assets in this category.
Proof of Stake reduced the energy cost of consensus by tying security to capital instead of computation. Ethereum migrated to PoS in 2022; Cardano, Solana, Avalanche, Polkadot, BNB Chain, and most modern L1s use some PoS variant. Validators earn yield in exchange for honest block production; misbehaving validators have their staked tokens slashed.
PoS tokens carry a built-in yield (5-15% APY is typical, paid in the native token), which changes how they're valued versus PoW tokens. Stakers' opportunity cost is the alternative use of capital, which makes staking yields competitive with risk-free rates. The model also enables liquid staking, where staked positions are tokenized (Lido, Rocket Pool) and can be used in DeFi.
The questions worth asking about a PoS token: how much of the supply is staked (security floor), what the unbonding period is (illiquidity risk), and how decentralized the active validator set is across operators and geographies.
