About EGLD
EGLD, known as eGold or Electronic Gold, is the native utility and governance token of the MultiversX network (formerly Elrond). It serves as the primary store of value and medium of exchange within the ecosystem, used to pay for network usage, transaction fees, and smart contract execution. EGLD is central to the network's security and governance, enabling holders to participate in the Secure Proof of Stake (SPoS) consensus via staking and to vote on key protocol upgrades. The token powers a highly scalable blockchain architecture that utilizes adaptive state sharding—comprising network, transaction, and state sharding—to achieve high throughput of up to 100,000 transactions per second with low latency. Developers on the platform are further incentivized by earning 30% of smart contract fees as royalties paid in EGLD.
