About Dogecoin
Dogecoin is an open-source digital currency and peer-to-peer medium for fast payments and digital tipping. Created in 2013 as a parody of the wild speculation in the cryptocurrency market, it is based on the popular "Doge" internet meme featuring a Shiba Inu. The network operates as a fork of LuckyCoin, which was itself a fork of Litecoin, and uses a proof of work consensus mechanism with the Scrypt algorithm. Unlike many other digital assets, Dogecoin features an uncapped supply and employs merged mining, allowing it to be secured simultaneously with other Scrypt-based networks. In 2026, it achieved a regulatory milestone by being classified as a digital commodity in the United States. The project is maintained by a global community of volunteers and the non-profit Dogecoin Foundation.
