Proof of Work (PoW)
Proof of Work secures a blockchain by requiring miners to spend electricity solving cryptographic puzzles for the right to add the next block. Tokenpedia tracks 42 assets in this category.
Bitcoin invented Proof of Work and remains its most committed practitioner. The model trades energy for security: an attacker would need to spend more on hardware and power than the network's combined miners to rewrite history. Litecoin, Dogecoin, Bitcoin Cash, and Monero are other long-running PoW chains; many older smart contract platforms (including pre-merge Ethereum) started here before migrating away.
PoW is the most battle-tested consensus mechanism, and Bitcoin's track record (no successful chain reorg in over a decade) is the strongest case for it. The trade-off is energy consumption, which has become a regulatory and ESG flashpoint. PoW tokens are typically valued for monetary properties (fixed supply, censorship resistance) rather than throughput or programmability.
When evaluating a PoW token, the relevant questions are hash-rate trend (a security signal), miner concentration, and whether the protocol's value proposition is store-of-value (Bitcoin), payments (Litecoin), or privacy (Monero).
