Layer 2 (L2)
Layer 2 networks settle transactions off the base L1 (usually Ethereum) and post compressed proofs back, getting most of the L1's security at a fraction of the fees. Tokenpedia tracks 58 assets in this category.
A Layer 2 inherits security from its underlying L1 by anchoring its state there. Optimistic rollups (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base) assume transactions are valid unless challenged within a fraud-proof window; ZK rollups (zkSync, Starknet, Polygon zkEVM) post cryptographic proofs that math-verify each batch.
L2 tokens are typically a combination of governance rights and sequencer fee shares. Their value depends on transaction volume the rollup attracts, the L1 fees they save users, and whether the sequencer is centralized today (most are) or decentralized on a credible roadmap. Base is interesting in this category for not having a token at all (Coinbase operates the sequencer).
The L2 narrative drove much of the 2024-2025 Ethereum thesis: as more activity moves from L1 to L2s, fee revenue concentrates at the rollup layer, and the underlying ETH still benefits from being the settlement asset. Worth tracking how much TVL each L2 holds and which apps choose to deploy there.
