Gaming (GameFi)
GameFi tokens power blockchain-native games and the in-game economies built on top of them: currencies, assets, and reward systems. Tokenpedia tracks 79 assets in this category.
GameFi turns in-game items and currencies into on-chain assets that players own and can trade outside the game. Axie Infinity proved the model in 2021 (and survived its eventual unwind); Illuvium, Pixels, Big Time, and dozens of newer titles are still building on it. The category overlaps heavily with NFTs, but the distinguishing feature is an active player base and an in-game utility layer.
The challenge has always been game quality. The first wave was play-to-earn first, game second; the result was thin gameplay and unsustainable token emissions that collapsed when the player base stopped growing. The second wave (Big Time, Illuvium, Star Atlas) is trying to ship games that hold attention without the financial incentive, then add the on-chain layer for ownership.
When evaluating a GameFi token, the questions are daily active players, retention beyond the first 30 days, and whether the token has utility (governance, in-game purchases) beyond speculation.
