About Namecoin
Namecoin (NMC) is a decentralized open-source information registration and transfer system based on the Bitcoin protocol. Launched in 2011 as the first fork of Bitcoin, it functions as a digital currency and a decentralized domain name system (DNS). Its primary use case is the registration of .bit domains, which are designed to be censorship-resistant and independent of central authorities. Namecoin was the first cryptocurrency to implement Auxiliary Proof of Work (merged mining), allowing it to be mined simultaneously with Bitcoin using the SHA-256 algorithm.
