EIGEN is the native token of EigenCloud (formerly EigenLayer), a verifiable cloud service platform and restaking protocol on Ethereum. The token acts as a universal inter-subjective working token designed to secure Actively Validated Services (AVS) by providing a mechanism to handle faults that are not attributable to objective on-chain proof. It powers a coordination layer for verifiable applications, services, and AI—including EigenDA and EigenCompute—enabling slashing and penalties for operators who deviate from expected behavior. As a core utility and governance asset, it facilitates the security of both on-chain and off-chain developer tools within the EigenCloud ecosystem.
