About tBTC
tBTC is a decentralized, permissionless wrapped Bitcoin asset backed 1:1 by BTC, designed to integrate Bitcoin's liquidity into smart contract platforms. It operates as a trust-minimized bridge, allowing Bitcoin holders to participate in decentralized finance (DeFi) activities such as lending, borrowing, and yield farming without relying on centralized intermediaries. Unlike custodial wrapped assets, tBTC utilizes threshold cryptography and a randomly selected group of operators on the Threshold Network (formed by the merger of Keep and NuCypher) to secure deposits. Originally launched as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, tBTC has expanded to a multi-chain presence including Solana, Arbitrum, Base, Polygon, Optimism, and Sui, maintaining censorship resistance through an honest-majority assumption and insurance coverage pools.
