XRP is the native cryptocurrency of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), a decentralized, open-source blockchain launched in 2012. It is designed to facilitate high-speed, low-cost international remittances and serves as a bridge currency for cross-border payments between various fiat and digital assets. Unlike proof-of-work systems, the XRP Ledger uses a unique consensus algorithm that enables near-instant settlements (typically 3-5 seconds) with high throughput.
