About XRP
XRP is the native cryptocurrency of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), a decentralized, open-source blockchain launched in 2012. It is designed to facilitate high-speed, low-cost international remittances and serves as a bridge currency for cross-border payments between various fiat and digital assets. Unlike proof-of-work systems, the XRP Ledger uses a unique consensus algorithm that enables near-instant settlements (typically 3-5 seconds) with high throughput. The total supply of 100 billion XRP was pre-mined at inception, with a significant portion held in escrow by Ripple Labs to support institutional liquidity and ecosystem growth. Beyond its role as a payment asset, XRP supports the representation of other units of value on the ledger and is integrated into RippleNet, a global network aimed at improving upon legacy financial systems.
